Coming to Australian cinemas this summer is MUSIC, a powerful and original story written and directed by acclaimed singer-songwriter and pop icon Sia. This film marks the directorial debut by the multi-Grammy nominee who also co-wrote the screenplay with Dallas Clayton based on her own short story.

MUSIC shines a spotlight on the many talents of a cast that stars Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winning Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), and Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton). Maddie Ziegler makes her film debut as the title character Music. Ziegler has been Sia’s friend and creative muse since 2014 when Sia directed her in the video for global smash hit “Chandelier.”

Hudson plays Zu, a free spirit estranged from her family who suddenly finds herself the sole guardian of her half-sister, Music, played by Ziegler.

Deeply felt, and a bold and compelling reinvention of the screen musical, MUSIC is the story of how individuals struggle and then come together and create community. Their journey is supported with incredible sound, visuals and dance, all choreographed by Sia’s longtime collaborator Ryan Heffington. The film features ten musical numbers built around original Sia compositions written expressly for the film and performed by its remarkable cast.

The musical drama explores the tenuous bonds that hold us together and imagines a world where those bonds can be strengthened in times of great challenge: love, trust, and being able to be there for each other is everything. MUSIC explores two of Sia’s favourite themes: finding your voice and creating family.

Other cast members include Juliette Lewis, Mary Kay Place, Ben Schwartz, Beto Calvillo, Kathy Najimy, Tig Notaro, Henry Rollins and Hector Elizondo.

With MUSIC, Sia has created a cinematic experience as profound and unique as its title character.
