After an extended sell-out season in 2018 in Melbourne and three Green Room Award nominations, producer David Venn has announced the Broadway hit BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL will return to Melbourne and premiere in Sydney this year.

Melbourne’s Athenaeum theatre will host the high energy feat for a strictly limited season from 12 – 28 July 2019. Due to overwhelming demand nationally, the production will premiere at Sydney from 27 August – 8 September, with more cities to be announced.

Sparkling with sass and inspired by the cult 1990s movie starring Kristen Dunst, this high energy hit comes from the minds of Broadway’s creative royalty, while the death-defying stunts performed by world-class cheerleading champions ensure broad appeal.

The Australian production will once again be directed by multi-Green Room Award nominee Alister Smith (Pacific Overtures, Urinetown! The Musical, The Drowsy Chaperone). Choreographer Michael Ralph (Georgy Girl, Loving Repeating, The Boy from Oz 2018) returns fresh from his Green Room Award nomination for Best Choreography for BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL.

Originally performed on Broadway and Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical, BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL features an original story by Tony Award winner, Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Hamilton), music by Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Broadway lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity).

After the Australian professional premiere in 2018 received widespread acclaim, the hit musical returns with some original cast members as well as some fresh faces. “We are thrilled to be returning to Melbourne and taking this version of the show to Sydney for the first time,” says Producer David Venn.

“This show is the perfect combination of sassy fun, relevant storylines and spectacular stunts. We are currently casting an extraordinary cast of triple-threat performers which is no mean feat – BRING IT ON is one of the most physically demanding musicals on stage. Which of course means we can’t do it without a few multi-talented cheerleading champions in the mix!”

The story follows Campbell who is captain of the squad and cheer-royalty at Truman High School. An unexpected redistricting forces her to spend her final year at the neighbouring Jackson High School. Campbell befriends Jackson’s dance crew girls and their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle and together they form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition, going head to head with her old squad at the National Championships.

BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL receives a critically acclaimed, long running Broadway season and has toured the United States before its Australian premiere.
