The Australian Ballet

In just over a month Sydney will become the first city in the world to see Kunstkamer, since it premiered in The Hague in 2019.

Never before has The Australian Ballet presented contemporary dance of this scale and ambition.

This epic new dance work is the creation of four of the most celebrated international choreographers working today, and comes to Australia direct from the acclaimed European dance company Nederlands Dans Theater.

David Hallberg spoke with Principal Artist Callum Linnane about what it means for Australia to see Kunstkamer.

What is Kunstkamer?

Inspired by the 18th-century cabinet of curiosities, Kunstkamer draws together diverse elements – stark movement, song, film, spoken word – into an eclectic and fascinating whole, bound together by recurring motifs and characters and featuring music by a vast array of composers from Beethoven to Bach to Britten, Janice Joplin to Joby Talbot.
