ab [intra] Sydney Season

Sydney Dance Company

2 – 11 June 2022, Roslyn Packer Theatre, Walsh Bay

Rafael Bonachela’s powerful masterwork ab [intra] returns for a special encore season in Sydney, fresh from the stages of France.

Sydney Dance Company has returned to Australia from a critically acclaimed sell-out French tour, which included a 2-week residency at the renowned Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris.

ab [intra] was heralded by French critics as:

“Breathtakingly poetic and beautiful… what happens on stage is of an almost incomprehensible fluidity and softness. And the public, fascinated, applauds standing. Run there!” Le Point

“We were touched to the heart by the grace of this extraordinarily powerful dance… this remarkable work by the Australian Company, performed by magnificent dancers, the choreographic language reaffirms its universal dimension. The life-giving energy of beauty.” La Croix

“… the company has returned to France with this incandescent piece that takes contemporary dance to its very highest level.” Unité et Diversité France

This was not the first time that French audiences have experienced ab [intra]. In September 2019, a duet from ab [intra] was performed by etoiles of the Paris Opéra Ballet for their prestigious 350th Anniversary Fundraising Gala at the Palais Garnier, alongside works from Ben Stevenson, Serge Lifar, George Balanchine and William Forsythe.

ab [intra]’s Sydney season will see one of Rafael Bonachela’s most career-defining works return to the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Walsh Bay for a limited time. It will also be the final time that audiences will be able to see senior dancer Davide di Giovanni performing on stage before he steps away from the ensemble after 7 years with the Company.

About ab [intra]

Rafael Bonachela’s award-winning work ab [intra] returns to Sydney for an encore season showcasing Australia’s premiere contemporary dancers.

ab [intra], meaning ‘from within’ in Latin is ‘an exploration of our primal instincts, our impulses and our visceral responses’, says choreographer Rafael Bonachela.

The music fuses lush cello with ambient electronica while the dancers occupy a visually arresting ethereal world.

This is a ferociously physical and emotional piece which will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

“★★★★ ab [intra] has to be seen to be believed”Sydney Morning Herald

“This is contemporary dance at its most evocative and beautiful…moments of sheer wonderment and unexpected emotional catharsis.” TimeOut Sydney
