Matilda Sweeps Awards Night

Plus all the Dance and MT Winners

Last night saw the 16th Annual Helpmann Awards presented on stage at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney before luminaries of Australia’s vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, cabaret, opera, classical music, theatre, dance and physical theatre.
Matilda The Musical was the success story of the evening, taking out wins in all 13 nominated categories – a record! – including best Musical. Bangarra Dance Theatre was another notable winner with several wins and also the JC Williamson Award recognising outstanding contribution to Australian performance culture going to Bangarra’s Artisitic Director Stephen Page. BEST CHOREOGRAPHY IN A MUSICAL: Peter Darling – Matilda The Musical
BEST DIRECTION OF A MUSICAL: Matthew Warchus – Matilda The Musical
BEST FEMALE ACTOR IN A MUSICAL: Molly Barwick, Dusty Bursill, Tiana Mirra, Alannah Parfett, Sasha Rose, Georgia Taplin, Bella Thomas Ingrid Torelli – Matilda The Musical
BEST FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MUSICAL: Elise McCann – Matilda The Musical
BEST MALE ACTOR IN A MUSICAL: James Millar – Matilda The Musical
BEST MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MUSICAL: Daniel Frederiksen – Matilda The Musical
BEST MUSICAL: The Royal Shakespeare Company and Louise Withers, Michael Coppel and Michael Watt with Chokey Productions, Just for Laughs Theatricals, Glass Half Full Productions, Paula Marie Black, Greenleaf Productions and Michael Lynch – Matilda The Musical
Matilda The Musical also won tech-industry awards for Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Music Direction, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design & Best Sound Design!
