It’s A Must See Again and Again

Certainly quite a full circle moment as I attended the Media Call for Cats The Musical at the precise theatre and perhaps by familiarity, just a row behind where I was initially a captivated and memorised young child, witnessing my first memory of seeing this magical show.

In fact it was probably in this moment I fell in love with the creative arts and knew I wanted to make this my career.

The 40th Anniversary Australian Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cats has pounced back onto the stage with electrifying energy at The Theatre Royal in Sydney.

The anticipation was high and this show certainly raised the roof with it’s incredibly talented artists and iconic music.

The 2025-2026 Austrailan Tour is certainly off to a stunning start. With Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot.

The explosive music and magical lights reveals a larger than life junkyard where we are transported to the beautiful connection and precious storyline within the land of these enduring felines.

Cats is a world wide phenomenon, touring across the globe since 1981. With it’s 3rd return to Australia, it truly still feels just as sacred to witness and enjoy as when we were first introduced and blessed to share this special show initially in 1985.

Directed by Trevor Nunn and Associate Director and Choreographer Gillian Lynne, along with Designer, John Napier this incredible musical truly warms your heart and keeps you captivated right from the opening overture as we are immersed in some show stopper moments of musical masterpieces and performances.

We are treated to some incredible performances by some of Australia’s legends in Dance and Musical Theatre, including Todd McKenney  who brings charm and depth to his dual roles as Bustopher Jones and Gus the Theatre Cat.

The embodiment and commitment that engages the true beauty of power and maturity in the performance of Grizabella performed by swing Aimee Jones for this particular performance, was truly amazing. Her voice is next level and the appreciation of those strong mighty notes is both impactive and inspirational. Her rendition of “Memory” resonates with profound emotion and passion.

Mark Vincent’s portrayal of Old Deuteronomy exudes wisdom and warmth, while Lucy Maunder who plays Jellylorum offers charisma and an infectious energy to the stage.

Des Flanagan’s, Rum Tum Tugger is both magnetic and vocally impressive. Along with sensational performances by Jarrod Draper, playing Munkustrap and Leigh Archer who plays Jennyanydots and Gumbie Cat.

In fact we are spoilt with the vocals of each character from the very moment the vocal magic starts, you will no doubt feel like you are listening to the original recording with the precision of these phenomenal artists.

Axel Alvarez dazzles as Mr. Mistoffelees, delivering a performance marked by precise ballet techniques and a magnetic stage presence. The iconic develope and technical awe from Victoria the White Cat executed by the talented Claudia Hastings is another example and reminder of how taxing this authentic choreography is. The cast make it look effortless and the way their mannerisms are embodied, so naturally as they portray our quirky feline’s throughout the show is truly delightful to witness.

Tom Davis infuses Skimbleshanks with infectious energy, and The dynamic duo of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, played by Jake O’Brien and Savannah Lind respectively, deliver a high-spirited and acrobatic performance that delights exceptional choreography and dance.

Under the guidance of Associate Director and Choreographer, Chrissie Cartwright, and Resident Director and Choreographer, Amy Berrisford, the production’s choreography is a visual feast. The ensemble’s synchronized movements and feline grace bring the Jellicle cats to life, with standout numbers that showcase both technical prowess and storytelling.

The transformation of actors into their feline counterparts is achieved through meticulous costume design and makeup artistry. Costume Supervisor, Tracy Stiles and Australian Costume Supervisor, Billy Roache ensure each outfit reflects the unique personality of the characters.

Wig Supervisor, Suzy Barrett, along with Australian Wigs and Makeup Supervisor, Kellie Ritchie, have certainly trained the cast to apply their own makeup, with precision enhancing the characterisation with the performance.

Musical Director, Paul White and Musical Supervisor, Peter McCarthy and Associate Musical DirectorSimon Holt breathe new life into Lloyd Webber’s iconic score. The live orchestra delivers a rich and immersive soundscape, enhancing the emotional depth and dynamic range of the musical numbers.

The technical aspects of the production are executed with precision. Production Sound Designer, Greg Pink and Associate Sound Designer, Michael Waters create an auditory experience that complements the onstage action.

Lighting Designer, Howard Eaton, with Associate Lighting Designer, Matthew Tunchon, crafts a visual atmosphere that transitions seamlessly between scenes, enhancing the overall storytelling.

Technical Director, L’Argent Wilson ensures that each performance runs smoothly, maintaining the high standards of the production.

This 40th Anniversary tour of Cats is a testament to the enduring appeal of the musical, brought to life by a dedicated and talented team.

Audiences are treated to a performance that honours the original production, while showcasing the vibrant creativity of its cast and crew. It’s a theatrical experience that leaves a lasting impression, reminding us why Cats continues to be a beloved classic in musical theatre
