INDance, Sydney Dance Company’s Bold Celebration of Independent Australian Choreography is Back

INDance

Sydney Dance Company

Sydney Dance Company’s acclaimed INDance season returns this August to offer an electrifying glimpse into the choreographic minds shaping Australian dance.

Across two weeks in the Neilson Studio, INDance presents four full-length productions of independent work – provocative, conceptually rich and ready to leap off the stage.

This year’s program features five outstanding artists – Rebecca Jensen, Amy Zhang, Alison Currie & Alisdair Macindoe and Jo Lloyd – selected to present four distinctive dance works. Each has been handpicked by a panel of industry advisors led by Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela.

INDance is a powerful expression of Sydney Dance Company’s enduring commitment to innovation and creative development. Through this initiative, the Company shares its stage and resources to ignite new possibilities for independent artists. For audiences, INDance offers access to fearless forms and fresh perspectives, works that challenge convention and are often not seen on the country’s major stages.

Now in its fourth year, INDance has established its place as a vibrant fixture in Australia’s contemporary dance calendar, a testament to its impact and momentum. With a track record of sold-out performances and critical acclaim, the season continues to raise the bar, spotlighting works that reflect the richness of Australian choreographic practice.

INDance is made possible through the generous support of the Neilson Foundation, whose investment enables artists to share their work with new audiences. This commitment serves to extend the life of independent dance work, creating space for it to return, be seen and celebrated beyond a single season.

Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela said; “INDance is one of our most important programs, underscoring our commitment to supporting independent dance. Each year, the calibre of work highlights the depth, intelligence and creativity driving Australia’s independent dance sector, and we thank the Neilson Foundation for making this program possible through their generous support. In 2025 we present four of the most perspective shifting works I’ve seen in recent years. I encourage audiences to come with curiosity, and allow these works to challenge, surprise and move them.”

Neilson Foundation Trustee, Paris Neilson, said: “As INDance reaches its fourth year, it is inspiring to see this initiative deepen its role within the artistic landscape, not only as a platform for independent choreographers, but as a space where truly contemporary ideas are given room to land and resonate. Its impact speaks to what is possible when artists are given the support to share ambitious work. Our commitment is about more than access to the stage; it’s about building opportunities. We’re proud to have stood with Sydney Dance Company in shaping INDance into a season that continues to grow in purpose.”
