Australia has been lucky as we have only produced quality dance TV shows including Strictly Dancing, Dancing With the Stars and SYTYCD. The US and UK have produced a whole lot of average dance shows including Dance Machine which aired on Channel Seven a few times and Step It Up & Dance on Foxtel which has very bizarre challenges and a group of very uninteresting and standard dancers. Well… SYTYCD Creator Nigel Lythgoe has seen the world take dance into their homes and has created ‘Superstars of Dance’ which was originally called Superstar Dancers of the World.
The name says it all. The show which debut in the US on January 4 pits skilled dancers of various genres from 8 different countries against each other. It’s like a mini Eurovision as each country has their own judge (Kelley Abbey is ours), team coach (Jason Gilkison) and 4 acts which includes two soloists, a duo and a larger group. The dancers are apparently the best in their field in their country. Standout Australian Contemporary Dancer Reed Luplau bought it home for Team Australia. Watch his performance above. Other Australian dancers include Henry Byalikov and Giselle Peacock. I’m sure one of the networks here will pick up the show.
