The producers of HAIRSPRAY THE MUSICAL are thrilled to announce that US born singing and acting sensation, TEVIN CAMPBELL has arrived in Melbourne to play the role of Seaweed.

Tevin comes to the Australia with a wealth of experience, having played the role of Seaweed in the Tony Award winning Broadway production of HAIRSPRAY from 2005 to 2009.

Tevin has enjoyed an incredibly successful music career to date. He was discovered by Quincy Jones when he was just 11 years old. He soon after featured on Jones’ 1989 studio album Back on the Block as vocalist on ‘Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me),’ which hit number one on the US R&B charts. He then appeared in Prince’s Graffiti Bridge film singing ‘Round and Round’ which bkecame a Gold Single in the US. All of this set the stage for his debut album, 1991’s T.E.V.I.N., which went Platinum and spawned two R&B chart-toppers, ‘Tell Me What You Want Me to Do’ and ‘Alone with You,’ as well as the R&B Top Five hit ‘Goodbye.’ I’m Ready, released two years later, did even better, going double Platinum and featuring the international number one hit ‘Can We Talk’. With a further 2 singles ‘I’m Ready’ and ‘Always in My Heart,’ reaching the Top Ten.

Tevin’s astonishing success includes 8 # 1 Billboard R&B singles, winner of a Soul Train Music Award, 5 Grammy Award nominations and 2 American Music Award nominations.

The character SEAWEED in HAIRSPRAY is super cool kid who sure knows how to bust a move! Seaweed teaches Tracy a thing or two about how to win everyone’s adoration on The Corny Collins Show. His infectious dance energy spreads quickly, getting all the kids in town on their feet doing everything from The Shake to The Stricken Chicken and beyond!
