HAIR

The Tony Award Winning Rock Musical

HAIR Summer Of Love

Strictly Limited Season | Chapel Off Chapel – Prahran | By StageArt

MELBOURNE, JANUARY 31 – FEBRUARY 17 2013 — Hot on the heels of the triumphant Broadway revival of the smash hit show that rocked, shocked and defined a generation, HAIR will grace Melbourne audiences for a strictly limited and highly anticipated season. Staged in the stunning and intimate Chapel Off Chapel, Melbourne’s most iconic and bohemian style venue. It will be perfect for the 2009 Tony Award Winning revival styled production.
StageArt Executive Producer Katherine Armstrong said, “We’re beyond excited to bring to Melbourne this musical, I believe the content is more relevant than ever. Equality amongst sexualities, genders and races, freedom of speech, political propaganda and adult hypocrisy is as rife and as hot a topic as it was when this ground breaking production was created”. Since opening HAIR has been seen by more than 3 million people worldwide. Most famous for its controversial nude scene, irreverence of the American flag, the free usage of illegal substances and the on stage presence of homosexual and heterosexual relations.
“Today Hair seems, if anything, more daring than ever.” – Time Magazine
“Hair Has emerged triumphant” – The New York Post

ABOUT THE SHOW

Hair tells the story of a group of politically active, long-haired hippies living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. The musical is renowned for its profane depiction of the use of illegal drugs, treatment of sexuality, irreverence for the American flag and the controversial nude scene. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of “Rock Musical”.
Phenomenal musical numbers include Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, I Believe in Love, Hair, I Got Life and Let The Sun Shine In. This show has a vitality, timelessness and a meaning that outlives the late 1960’s and early 1970’s in America.
Directed by Robbie Carmellotti, a StageArt Executive, published play right and award winning director, Carmellotti’s vision is to stage the show with the whole intention on the story, the words and the message. “The script and music is so powerful and passionate, I want the audience, to feel, believe and be moved by the beauty of what the show was originally written to achieve” says Carmellotti.
Joining the production team is Paul Malek from Collaboration the Project fame. This award winning choreographer and highly regarded professional has produced over 20 dance pieces. He has been in high demand after his work on So You Think You Can Dance, becoming Melbourne’s leading choreographer/dance producer as his work and passion to develop the industry is never ending. Cameron Thomas joins the team as Musical Director. He has worked with The Production Company, Magnormas and toured Australia and Asia as both a Musical Director, Keys player and Performer.
Midsumma is Melbourne’s arts and cultural festival which continues to celebrate queer culture. Held over three weeks every year from mid-January through to mid-February. The festivals program is mind-blowing and ever-eclectic. Midsumma showcases culture and creation, acceptance and artistry on a level equalling no other.
