An Audience with the Cast of WICKED!

DanceLife was lucky enough to be in the audience for the WICKED Special that will be screening on the W Channel on Saturday @ 7.30pm on Foxtel.

What can I say... Melbourne is sure in for a surprise. If you are a fan of the musical already you have nothing to worry about. The aussies will certainly deliver in this show. Some of you may know of Amanda Harrison (Elphaba) and Lucy Durack (Galinda/Glinda). For those who don't, you soon will. These girls were made for playing the lead roles in Wicked. I don't want to give too much away... just watch the special! You will then understand where I'm coming from.

Rob Guest and Maggie Kilpatrick are the veterans of the cast. Two strong individuals that engage and entertain from the moment they hit the stage. Rob Guest still has an amazing voice. I look forward to seeing Maggie in the production. She will bring a new dimension to the character of Madame Morrible.

Now to the boys of the group... Rob Mills and Anthony Callea who first came into our homes through our television screens on Australian Idol. One, born for the theatre the other born to sing at the pub. Even though Rob Mills needs to be the centre of attention 99% of the time he has definitely grown since Idol. Last night he proved that he has working hard on his voice and has learnt some discipline over the years. I'm intersted to see what he will bring to the character of Fiyero. Anthony Callea is a true professional. His voice is amazing, his presence is strong and his overall attitude is genuine and grateful. If only his role as Boq was a larger one with more songs. I wouldn't be surprised if Anthony becomes the Boq of all time.

If you are not in Melbourne then plan a long weekend and head to Melbourne to see the show. Wicked will have it's opening night on Saturday 12 July. Go to www.ticketek.com.au to get your tickets!

BE WATCHING THE W CHANNEL ON SATURDAY AT 7.30PM FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A WICKED EXPERIENCE.

Leah's Wickedly Wonderful Experience

WOW! WOW! And WOW!

In short, one of the finest musicals to hit our shores in a very long time!

So off I went to the green and black-tie event, I were the green everyone else wore the black tie!

As the green carpet was laid out for all stars big and small to follow into the Regent Theatre the air was thick with excitement and wonderment as we sipped on our "Ozmopolitan's", all I wanted to do was get in and get this show under way, the suspense was killing me.

Once seated the set was already impressive and the layout made the theatre look bigger than Ben Hur, I was even more excited I thought I was going to pee my pants!!!

House Lights fade and into it we were, now I don't want to go into much detail at all in this review because I REALLY REALLY want you to buy a cheap airfare and head to Melbourne to see it, for it is truly magnificent and I don't think you can wait for it to get to you.

Lucy Durack plays the self -indulgent, self obsessed cutie pie Glinda the good witch and what a talent! This role was made for her and her comic timing is impeccable.

My favourite scene is "Popular" when you see it you will understand. Durack has this knack of transporting us into a familiar pop culture bimbo territory but brings it back time and time again into a theatre world, very clever.

Amanda Harrison in the role of Elphaba is a beautiful green creature whom you fall in love with for her sincerity and strength as an individual but also her shyness and traits of vulnerability. "As long as you're mine" duet with Fiyero (Rob Mills) moved me to tears, so strong and so capable of moving mountains, they match so well in voice and in physicality it really is a great moment in the show and really got me in the heart.

One thing I will comment on though is how different the female leads voices are and how I found they really do not have a great blend when singing together, however that doesn't mean to say that it was painful to listen to but I do think that it was a minute flaw in the production.

The role of Fiyero is played by the increasingly popular Rob Mills. I must say I was very impressed by his newfound theatrical voice and acting skills. His character portrayal to me was like a cross between Gaston from Beauty and The Beast and Jessie McCartney, very youthful, conceited, beautiful and attractive to all. Rob has really put the work in to this project and it shows I believe he can only get better.

You do want to see more of her role, Maggie Kirkpatrick was a fabulous Madame Morrible and it was just a plain honour to watch her walk out on stage every time.

Rob Guest as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz was well received and his little jig that he does in "Wonderful" did put a little smile on my face.

Doctor Dilliamond is a poor old soul of animal played so well by the wonderful Rodney Dobson.

B

ig Ups go to Penny McNamee, Anthony Callea and the rest of the principal cast who really help to put this show into one of the greats for Aussie musical theatre.

I must tell you though that not only is it the onstage cast that makes this show it is Kenneth Posner's ridiculously amazing lighting design, Gavan Swift who designed the lighting for Tapdogs is our Aussie representative and a true artist and lighting genius, this show is transformed time and time again into worlds of fantasy simply by the lighting and it is a true detriment to Swifts avid eye and artistry.

Speaking of artistry costume designer and Olivier award winner for it Susan Hilferty is a designer of pure fabulosity!!! The ensemble costumes are truly amazing and mysteriously funky in their own wicked way. Our Aussie wardrobe is co-ordinated by the man himself Billy Roache and what a wonderful job he has done.

The set design and production as a whole is something of a monstrosity of top-notch creativity and really allows you to be transported to Oz for the experience of a lifetime.

In saying that I believe the ensemble are having an experience of a lifetime executing choreography that you only dream to dance. Wayne Cilento who credits himself as a Musical Stager is a multi award choreographer who's staging is a dream to watch and so relevant and current choreographically yet lyrical and classic and all round enjoyable to watch, I was on the edge of my seat wanting so bad to learn the chorey it was fantastic. Ellen Simpson is a stand out in the ensemble with her flaming red hair and striking legs and style she is really one dancer we all need to watch as she climbs the ladder.

Shout outs go to Ryan Sheppard, Todd Hampton, Lockhart Brownlie, Romina Villafranca, Todd Hampton, Deanna O'Leary and Ross Hannaford who all make a wonderful show that touch more wonderful, their stage presence and commitment is very humbling.

The book of inspiration Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire is cleverly written and visiting social obligations and personal struggles and courage throughout the new generation.

With a genius and experienced award winning creative team inclusive of:

Book- Winnie Holzman (thirtysomething, My So-Called Life MTV)

Composer - Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Disney's Pocahontas, DreamWorks The Prince of Egypt)

Direction - Joe Mantello (Take me out, Love, Valour Compassion- film)

Ass.Dir. - Lisa Leguillou - Chicago, Vagina Monologues, The Odd Couple)

Whispers at the after party were that this production is better than Broadway.....Hey I am just gossiping on what I heard!

Wicked Australia in my opinion has re-ignited theatre in Australia, with this phenomenal cast and crew I really do thank you all for giving a great performance and allowing me to do what's required of me in the theatre....

LAUGH.CRY, CLAP, HOLLA, RELATE, ENJOY, DREAM!!!

Big Love!

Rose

The Wicked Todd Hampton

Todd commenced his training at Campbelltown High School of the Performing Arts. His passion for Dance and the Performing Arts led him to further his education at Brent Streets Talent Development High School. While completing his training, Todd gained extensive experience working as a Performer while studying. Credits include 'Dare to Dance' 7 Network, Variety Heart, Carols in the Domain, TV Turns 50, and other charity events. Todd is currently performing in the ensemble of Wicked. DanceLife caught up with Todd to chat about this awesome opportunity.

1. Tell us about your dance training growing up. What do youbelieve was the most valuable class you have ever taken and why?

My dance training started off as a hobby at a local dance school until I discovered it was I wanted to for the rest of my life. At this point in my career, I made the move to Brent St Studios to further my training. My favourite dance class growing up was hip hop and jazz but the class that I found to really help shape my style and technique was Ballet and Contemporary.

2. You have just scored a role in the ensemble of the mega hit musical Wicked. Tell us about the audition process?

My Agent, Instinct, had secured the audition for me months in advanced, so I didn't really think about it for a while! At the time of the auditions I started out with a Male dance call then was called back for another Male dance call followed by two more partnering auditions. After that I completed 2 vocal auditions. Then it was just waiting to see if I got offered a role in the show.

3. You relocated to Melbourne for the show. How have you adjusted to life without your family?

I definitely found it difficult at first being here without my family, however I got use to it pretty quickly as I have been so busy with the show!

4. Take us through a regular show night for you. From leaving the house to packing up and the end of the night and everything in between. Take us behind the scenes.

I wake up, have breakfast & pack my things go to arrive at the theatre by 1.00pm. We then have a half an hour physical and vocal warm up. About 1.30pm I start getting into costume doing my hair and have my mic check. Now we are ready for show #1, its 2pm. After the first show I have a break for an hour and a half, we usually all go and have a bite to eat or have a power nap. Now we need to get ready for the second show. I go home, wind down, sleep, get up and do it all again!

5. How are you coping with performing 8 shows a week? What tips have you been given to keep healthy and energetic?

At first I found it quite exhausting, but after time it becomes muscle memory. I find that eating healthy, resting my voice and looking after my body is the main key to keep fit and healthy for 8 shows a week. I have been given different techniques both physically and vocally to apply to my performance. I suppose I just love what I am doing, so it isn't that hard after al!

6. There is an amazing cast working on Wicked. How has it been working with the celebrity cast members including Rob Guest, Maggie Kirkpatrick, Anthony Callea and Rob Mills?

Working with some of Australia's most talented performers is a privilege and also inspiring! It makes want to have a lead role in a musical or follow in their footsteps. I look at them more as "role models" rather than "celebrities".

LET’S HEAR FROM THE ORCHESTRA – A CHAT WITH BRIAN USIFER, FROM WICKED ON BROADWAY!

Brian Usifer Photo 2010

Heh Guys,
As you may or may not know I was recently in the wonderful NYC soaking up the atmosphere, being a typical tourist and seeing lots of shows. And as I was sitting watching HAIR ,with the orchestra on stage I thought to myself - what would it be like to be part of a Broadway Show as a member of the orchestra. We are always bringing you news and views from dancers so I figured it would be cool to explore the world of the "muso" and see what one of them has to say.

Enter Brian Usifer - the perfect candidate for my interview having just landed a gig on Broadway with the amazingly popular sell out WICKED!

Christine: So Brian, what is your current position on Wicked? And what does it entail?

Brian: I've just joined the show as one of the rehearsal pianists. Basically my job is to be at rehearsals for new cast members, understudies/swings, etc. and try to sound like a huge orchestra. It's one of the hardest scores I've had to play, so it's been a great challenge working on it. There are a few people who also do this, so how much I play depends on what new cast members there are or what understudies are going on for the first time as well as the other pianist's schedules.

Christine: Apart from playing keyboards, I believe that you also play drumkit? Do you have any other specific musical skills and do you think they had a role in landing you this gig?

Brian: Yeah I have played drums and guitar in bands since I was in high school. I don't get to play them often anymore but every once in a while I'll get to sit at a drum set and rock it out. I do a lot of writing on guitar, so I get around to that more often. It's very important to know about other instruments that are used in theatre orchestras because it helps you communicate with the musician better if you have an idea of how his instrument works. I also played trumpet and clarinet when I was in high school so I have a good sense of them as well.

Christine: For dancers/singers the competition to get a job on a Broadway Show is huge and usually involves many auditions and call backs etc . Does the same apply to musicians? Or is it a gig you get through recommendation? Basically - what was the process for you to land this job?

Brian: It's actually really difficult for musicians to get a job on and off Broadway. There usually are not any auditions for those jobs, and there are many ways that one can come about it. There is a contractor from the union on every show, and they will work with the Music Director to find the best musicians for the job. As it is in any other industries, everyone has "their people" that they know and trust and like to work with, so usually the first bunch of jobs go to those people. From there, the contractor may ask around for other musicians that may fit the part better. A Broadway music team is typically large; there's often a Music Supervisor, a Music Director, an Associate Music Director, sometimes an Assistant Music Director, and then rehearsal pianists, and music assistants. The way to get on that team is to know someone close to the top, like the contractor or Music Supervisor. In terms of Wicked, I've been lucky enough to work with the guys in the music department in a few different capacities and on a few different shows. There was an opening and they asked if I was interested, and I said "of course I am!" They are some of my heroes in the industry so I feel very lucky to be working with them.

Christine: What advice would you give to a musician out there whose dream is to get a job on a show in NYC?

Brian: I know it sounds cliche, but you have to be willing to practice, work really hard, and be excellent to work with. Those are traits that not every performer has at an equal level, so it's important to figure out where you're lacking and get to work on it. In the end, you have to be a good enough player to play the part and also be consistent. Shows typically have 8 performances a week and you have to be able to basically do it the same way every time. That takes lots of training and skill. It's also very important to be flexible in terms of style. Theatre today runs the gamut stylistically, and you have to be able to play things like jazz, pop, rock, traditional music theatre, classical based music theatre, hip hop, polka...the list goes on. Nobody is equally as awesome with every style, but it's really important to at least be familiar with them.

Christine: Where do you see yourself taking this career path and do you still keep other projects going at the same time?

Brian: Since playing rehearsals for Wicked is a part time thing, I'm able to keep other projects going. New shows take a lot of time to develop, so I'm attached to a few that are in different stages of development. I'm hoping my career will continue to develop and grow! There are so many different things that I like to do in theatre, I'd be happy to do any of them at the highest level possible. Orchestrating and Music Directing are really where I'm focusing my energies right now, and I've been lucky enough to get to do them a lot.

Christine: What do you think makes a good musician?

Brian: It's like anything else, you have to care about your craft. And, well, you have to love music, and you have to love your instrument! Musicians are communicators-it's your job to make people feel something. I don't care if people love or hate my music, as long as they feel something. In the professional world, communication and collaboration is the key. You have to be great at your instrument and always be willing to learn something new, but when it comes down to it, if you want to get a job people need to like to work with you.

So there you have it - next time you are sitting watching a show and enjoying the fantastic music that goes with it. Give some attention to the passionate musicians who contribute so much to the feel and emotion of the production.

There is always so much going on in every aspect of a show and without every piece of the pie the result just wouldn't be the same.

And a huge shout out to Brian for taking the time to talk with me whilst I was in NYC!

Wicked's New Boq

Anthony Callea will leave Wicked shortly and is to be replaced by theatrical newcomer Stuart Fisher.

Fisher will begin working with the company next week, a production spokesperson has confirmed. He'll have wardrobe fittings and then begin rehearsals for the role of Boq.

A 2007 graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Wicked is Fisher's first major break.

Callea, a former Australian Idol contestant, made his theatrical debut in Wicked. A record-breaking pop star, Callea's casting ensured the show earned wider public recognition in its early stages.

Callea's departure is the second major cast change Wicked has faced so far. Bert Newton recently replaced Rob Guest as the Wizard, after Guest tragically died after suffering a massive stroke.

BITS & PIECES

Last week Wicked auditioned for a few new ensemble members and again like the first audition many people turned up to try their luck. Sources have told DanceLife that the final men standing included Loredo and Danny from SYTYCD. They are only looking for one male ensemble member so it will be very interesting to see who they select.

In other news Jason Coleman was spotted in Bali on the weekend living it up after working his butt off during SYTYCD. It must be hard trying to run a studio in Melbourne with over a thousand dancers coming in and out every week plus fly to Sydney each week for the show. A well deserved small holiday, don't you think?

DanceLife will be heading off to Foxtel tonight for the filming of ‘A Night With The Cast of Chicago'. We loved the Wicked special and am sure this one will not disappoint. Look out for a write up on the show tomorrow. Chicago opens this week in Sydney at the Star Theatre with opening night on Sunday. Keep your eyes out on Monday for our thoughts on the show.

EVERYDAY IS WICKED

Sydney faced one of its biggest theatrical tests yesterday when tickets for the Capitol Theatre season of the Broadway blockbuster musical Wicked went on sale through Ticketmaster.

The show broke several box office records in Melbourne, where it opened at the Regent Theatre a year ago. It will play in Melbourne until August and while full houses are no longer a regular sight, the show has very much held its own.

The Capitol Theatre season starts on September 5 and solid pre-bookings are crucial. There has been an extensive marketing campaign across television, radio and newspapers in the last two weeks promoting that tickets go on sale yesterday.

Wicked is unique," said the Australian production's co-Producer John Frost.

"It's a phenomenon, quite unlike any other musical. It comes with all the blockbuster bells and whistles, certainly. But aside from its spectacle, wonderful lyrics and score, its wit and warmth, Wicked also touches other, unexpected, and intriguing emotions."

When Wicked opened on Broadway, it worked its magic on critics and audiences alike winning 20 major awards including three Tony Awards and a Grammy Award.

Wicked has not officially announced a Sydney cast but the majority of the Melbourne company is expected to travel north.

WICKED JOINS FORCES WITH TARONGA ZOO FOR WICKED DAY 2009

WICKED Australia is partnering with Taronga Zoo for WICKED Day in 2009. WICKED Day is celebrated worldwide in the last week of October in cities where the musical is playing. It is designed for WICKED to give something back to the local community. With the strong themes about how humans interact with and how they treat animals in WICKED, Taronga Zoo is an ideal recipient of some volunteer support.

The WICKED cast will be working at Taronga Zoo to assist with their Backyard to Bush project on Thursday October 29. This project involves bush care and management to ensure that this precinct remains a pristine Australian bush habitat for the range of native Australian animals that roam within. About 20 members of the WICKED cast will be involved.

In addition to rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty, the team at WICKED will also take collections in the theatre for Taronga Zoo during the week from October 27 to November 1.

Fans of the show who wish to celebrate WICKED Day are encouraged to book tickets to the matinee performance on Sunday 1 November and dress as their favourite WICKED character. There will be on-the-spot WICKED prizes for the Best Dressed prior to the commencement of the matinee. Winners will also have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the cast after the show.

$30 FRONT ROW TICKETS TO WICKED

WICKED is setting box office records at Sydney's Capitol Theatre. Demand for tickets is intense. But some are kept unsold until just before every performance.

A limited number of front row seats - specially priced at $30 per person - are held in reserve for the WICKED Ballot. Fans who arrive at the Capitol Theatre box office two and a half hours ahead of every performance can enter the ballot. Their names are collected and placed in a barrel. The winners are drawn half an hour later and their names called. The winners must be at the draw and have valid photo ID. The winning tickets cost them just $30 and they can buy two, for themselves and a friend. (The tickets must not be sold to a third party.)

"The Ballot is a great way for people to see WICKED if for some reason they can't book ahead," says WICKED's Australian co-Producer John Frost. "They may be visitors from interstate or overseas and in Sydney for just a day or two, and haven't booked ahead. Tourists are always among the ballot entries at the Capitol's box office.

"Students and young people love the idea of the Ballot. On impulse they turn up at the box office hoping to buy seats and find there's the chance of getting front row seats at the next performance. And if their names aren't drawn they can come back as often as they like. Eventually, they calculate, they'll get in and have their WICKED way!"

WICKED WELCOMES A NEW NESSAROSE

Australia's favourite musical is about to reveal a new star. In March, WICKED will welcome Elisa Colla for her professional debut in the role of Nessarose, sister of Elphaba.

Only 21 years of age, Elisa graduated from the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) in 2009 and is thrilled to be cast in the role of Nessarose. While at AIM she appeared in the musicals Promises, Promises and Dusty: The Original Pop Diva, and her previous musical credits include Grease, Oklahoma! and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Elisa said, "I feel so lucky to be cast in this extraordinary show as my first professional musical. It is so magical! I can't wait to slip into Nessarose's costume and be a part of this glorious production."

Penny McNamee, who has played Nessarose for more than 18 months since WICKED first opened in Melbourne in July 2008, is leaving the show to return to work in film and television. After performing Nessarose in almost 650 shows and winning a Green Room Award as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Penny says she is going to miss her WICKED family. "I'm taking away such wonderful friendships from this show," she said. "Everyone has become so close. Performing in WICKED has been such an extraordinary career opportunity, and I've learned so much; not just the discipline to play eight performances a week for such a long time, but my confidence as a performer is so much greater. I'm really going to miss Nessarose and my WICKED family."

WICKED Australia Co-Producer John Frost is delighted to welcome Elisa to the cast. "Elisa is a wonderfully talented young performer with a brilliant future. We conducted some of the most extensive auditions ever undertaken in Australia to find the best performers for WICKED, and we were lucky enough to find Elise right under our noses in Sydney. She will make a beautiful new Nessarose. I sincerely thank Penny for her significant contribution to making WICKED such a unique cultural phenomenon in Melbourne and now in Sydney."

WICKED has won 26 major awards including three Tony Awards®, a Grammy® Award and six Helpmann Awards® including Best Musical. Single tickets to WICKED are now onsale until March 14. Bookings at 1300 723 038, www.wickedthemusical.com.au or www.ticketmaster.com.au

AMANDA HARRISON LEAVES WICKED FOR NEW CHALLENGES

It was announced today that Amanda Harrison, who has played the role of Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West in the musical WICKED since it opened in Melbourne two years ago, is moving on. After an extensive nation-wide search, Amanda was cast in this iconic role in December 2007, alongside Lucy Durack as Glinda the Good Witch, and opened in July 2008 at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. After a record breaking 13 month season in Melbourne, WICKED opened at Sydney's Capitol Theatre with Harrison and Durack again leading the cast.

After this lengthy, exhilarating and exhausting season of performances, and a recent time of rest and reflection, Harrison has decided to move on. "I've had the most incredible time with WICKED, a wonderful roller coaster ride," Harrison said. "It has been a huge challenge conquering this role, the role of my career so far. It has given me so much, from the friendships I'll carry with me forever and the opportunities outside of WICKED like singing at Carnegie Hall and at Carols in the Myer Music Bowl.

"But the very reasons I've loved playing Elphaba are the reasons I now need to hang up my hat and broomstick. It's such a demanding and all absorbing role. I'm very much looking forward to seeing new Elphabas rising to the challenge, and to new challenges for me, be they film or TV or maybe down the track, more musical theatre, my first love."

WICKED Australia Co-Producer John Frost thanked Harrison for her enormous contribution to making WICKED the huge success it is. "Amanda Harrison brought an edge to Elphaba that is rarely seen; passion, intelligence and inner strength, as well as soaring vocals. WICKED is unique, a phenomenon, quite unlike any other musical. It's one of those rare shows that touches people deeply, mostly through the extraordinary friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. We were blessed to find Amanda and Lucy for these roles, and Amanda has set the bar high for the Elphabas who come after her. I wish her well for the next adventure in her career."

The role of Elphaba will now be shared between Jemma Rix, who has been the Standby Elphaba since the show opened in Melbourne, and Pippa Grandison. Rix, from the NSW Central Coast, played Elphaba in a world first staged adaptation of WICKED in Japan before returning to Australia to join the Australian production. Grandison has played leading roles in musicals like The Witches of Eastwick, We Will Rock You, Company and STC's Into the Woods and A Little Night Music.

ROB MILLS TO DEPART WICKED

John Frost, WICKED Australia Co-Producer, announced today that Rob Mills, who has played the role of Fiyero in the musical WICKED since it opened in Melbourne two years ago, is moving on. Mills' last performance will be on Sunday June 6.

After an extensive nation-wide search, Mills was cast in the role of the playboy Prince, seemingly shallow and self absorbed, the love interest for both Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the green-skinned "Wicked" Witch. It was a role he had sought ever since hearing the music a couple of years before. WICKED opened in July 2008 at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne and played for a record breaking 13 month season, before it moved to Sydney's Capitol Theatre in September 2009.

Mills admitted he is going to miss his WICKED family. "Playing Fiyero in WICKED has been my dream role and Musical Theatre has become my home. I've learnt so much from my wonderful cast and crew family and will miss them all dearly. I sincerely thank John Frost and the GFO team for giving me the chance to be a part of this amazing production. I'm looking forward to the next challenge and look forward to treading the boards again very soon."

John Frost thanked Mills for his contribution to making WICKED the huge success it is. "Rob was determined to play Fiyero and fought hard throughout the audition process to obtain the role. It has been wonderful watching him grow as a performer and make the role his own. Rob rapidly grew from that carefree finalist on Australian Idol into a leading man on the musical theatre stage. I thank Rob sincerely for being a part of WICKED for the past two years, and look forward to seeing what this surprising young man does next."

The search is now underway to find WICKED's new playboy Prince.

SHOSHANA BEAN TO PERFORM IN SYDNEY

Performing in Sydney for one night only on Sunday June 27 is Broadway star Shoshana Bean. Shoshana will be performing her acclaimed cabaret show in Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney.

Best known for her roles in the Broadway smash hits WICKED and HAIRSPRAY, Shoshana recently released her debut solo album SUPERHERO on her own label. In its first week of sales, SUPERHERO reached #5 on the iTunes R&B charts, making it the only independent album in the top 100.

Shoshana first appeared on the New York City theatre scene in the Off-Broadway revival of GODSPELL. Soon after, she made her Broadway debut in the original cast of the Tony Award-winning production of HAIRSPRAY and went on to replace Idina Menzel as the famed green-skinned witch Elphaba in the Broadway sensation WICKED.

Following her year-long Broadway run, she was invited to reprise her performance throughout North America in the WICKED national tour. She appeared at the Kennedy Centre in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and as the Narrator in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.

Most recently Shoshana headlined in the Las Vegas burlesque revue PEEPSHOW, conceived and directed by Jerry Mitchell. She made her Los Angeles concert debut at the Ford Amphitheatre in June 2008, and in November made her New York City concert debut to a sold out crowd at Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Centre. For this accomplishment she was presented with a Woman of Valour award by Hadassah, a Jewish Women's organization. In addition to theatrical and concert appearances across the country, she has performed on THE TODAY SHOW, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, MARTHA STEWART, QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY, MTV's MADE, and SOUL TRAIN CHRISTMAS STARFEST, to name a few.

Shoshana has been a back-up singer for an endless list of superstars including Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Destiny's Child, N'Sync, Ray Charles, Britney Spears and Michael Jackson at KTU's Miracle on 34th Street and Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration, both at Madison Square Garden. She gained national attention when she teamed up with Grammy Award nominee Brian McKnight to honour Aretha Franklin on the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. The duo performed Franklin's classic "Ain't No Way" on the nationally broadcast show, prompting a live audience to erupt into a standing ovation before the song was over.

She can be heard on several recordings and cast albums including GODSPELL (2000 Revival cast), the original cast recording of HAIRSPRAY, and the Actors Fund recordings of HAIR ("I Believe in Love") and DREAMGIRLS. She has also lent her voice to the motion picture soundtracks of HAIRSPRAY, Disney's ENCHANTED, and the Wayans brothers comedy DANCE FLICK.

WICKED TAKES ITS FINAL BOW IN SYDNEY ON SEPTEMBER 12

syndey_dec

More than twelve months after its spectacular Sydney Premiere, the curtain will come down on WICKED at the Capitol Theatre for the last time on September 12, 2010.

"After more than two astonishing years in Australia, 866 glorious performances seen by well over a million people, it will be time for WICKED to close," said John Frost, Australian Co-Producer of WICKED. "Sydneysiders have only 12 more weeks to see one of the most successful shows in theatre history at the most perfect theatre it could play in, the glorious Capitol Theatre."

"Right from the start this show has been an overwhelming hit. Audiences have been captivated by the soaring ballads, the spectacular sets, costumes and lighting, and been draw into the emotional richness of this beautiful story. We were hoping for a strong response in Sydney when we moved from Melbourne last year, and it has exceeded all expectations in the toughest theatre market in the country. Sydney took WICKED to its heart, and we've been thrilled by the response from Government, sponsors, theatregoers and the general public. WICKED has brought a whole new audience into the theatre for the first time; they have loved their experience and will come back for more.

"WICKED is unique, a phenomenon, the winner of 35 major awards including the Grammy® Award, three Tony® Awards and six Helpmann® Awards, a musical that enchants audiences around the world and right across the spectrum. We are so proud of our extraordinarily talented cast, many of whom have been with the show for the whole run. They are arguably the best WICKED cast in the world."

WICKED has had a record breaking run in Australia. The Australian production began at Melbourne's Regent Theatre in June, 2008 finishing up in August, 2009. It transferred to Sydney's Capitol Theatre on September 5, 2009. WICKED has smashed numerous records during its Australian run, including both Melbourne and Capitol Theatre box office records. On Tuesday 11 May 2010 the one millionth ticket to the Australian production of WICKED was purchased.

Currently in its 7th year on Broadway, WICKED's four North American and four international companies have cumulatively grossed nearly $1.8 billion and have been seen by nearly 23 million people worldwide.

WICKED is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the enchanting story of how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

WICKED, with (music and lyrics) by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award-winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman (My So Called Life, Once And Again and thirtysomething), is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B Platt and David Stone, with John Frost as Australian Co-Producer.

WICKED flies west to Adelaide in April 2011

syndey_dec

The most successful musical in the world today, WICKED, is officially set to fly west to Adelaide to open in the Festival Theatre in April 2011.

Announcing the season WICKED Australia Co-Producer John Frost said, "Right from the start this show has been an overwhelming hit so we are absolutely thrilled to be able to bring this show, in all its emerald glory, to my home town of Adelaide - there is no place like home. More than 20,000 South Australians have already seen the show during its record breaking Melbourne and Sydney seasons and there has been an active fan-based Facebook campaign to bring the show to Adelaide.

"WICKED is a phenomenon, the most successful musical in the world today, and appeals to everyone from 8 to 80. People love it for so many different reasons - some people come to see WICKED for the engrossing story inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name by author Gregory Maguire, some for the astonishing sets and costumes, some for the soaring ballads, some for the deeper messages, and some to see the life-affirming friendship between the two girls who grow up to be Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. Melbourne and Sydney audiences have been blown away by WICKED, which heads next to Brisbane in January 2011.

"WICKED is the winner of 35 major awards including the Grammy Award, three Tony Awards and six Helpmann Awards. It's a musical that enchants audiences around the world and right across the spectrum" he said.

The Hon. John Hill, Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts says, "I'm really looking forward to seeing WICKED and know this international blockbuster will receive a very warm and enthusiastic welcome in Adelaide."

Douglas Gautier, CEO and Artistic director, Adelaide Festival Centre said, "We are proud to be hosting this much anticipated event in the Festival Theatre as part of our annual program in 2011."

WICKED's record-breaking Australian run began in June 2008 at Melbourne's Regent Theatre, where it broke the city's box office record and ran through August 2009.

The production transferred to Sydney's Capitol Theatre on September 5, 2009 and will conclude its record-breaking run on September 12, 2010 having played more than 866 performances and having been seen by well over 1 million people.

WICKED relates the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Currently in its 7th year on Broadway, WICKED's four North American and four international companies have cumulatively grossed $1.9 billion and have been seen by 24 million people worldwide.

WICKED, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award-winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman (My So Called Life, Once And Again and thirtysomething), is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B Platt and David Stone, with John Frost as Australian Co-Producer.

WICKED CASTS ITS MAGIC OVER HALF A MILLION IN SYDNEY

Today it was announced that 500,000 people have snapped up tickets for WICKED in Sydney, Australia's very own Emerald City.

WICKED first opened at Sydney's Capitol Theatre on September 5, 2009 and since then Sydneysiders have embraced the musical as their own. The show has broken all previous weekly box office records for a musical at the Capitol Theatre, and now WICKED has achieved the milestone of having been seen by more than 500,000 people in Sydney.

Australian Co-Producer of WICKED John Frost is thrilled that the production has reached this landmark and is constantly surprised at the records that WICKED makes and breaks. "This show is a phenomenon. It is the most successful musical in the world today so it's no wonder the city of Sydney has fallen under its magical spell. Sydney audiences have taken the show to their hearts, with some people coming to the theatre for the first time in their lives and others seeing the show multiple times. I'd like to thank Sydney for helping us reach the milestone of half a million people."

WICKED was originally due to close in Sydney on September 12 but due to an unprecedented demand for tickets it has been extended by 2 weeks. It will now close on Sunday, September 26 with no further extension possible.

Minister for the Arts and Acting Tourism Minister, Virginia Judge said the Sydney season reflects the city's status as Australia's creative capital. "Events NSW estimates that one in three visitors to WICKED comes from outside Sydney, with tens of thousands of international visitors making it part of their Sydney experience," she said. "From an interstate perspective, the greatest numbers are coming from Queensland and Canberra and people living in regional NSW are travelling to see WICKED in Australia's very own Emerald City."

Sydney is well placed to capitalise on interstate and international markets when it comes to musical theatre, Ms Judge said. "Sydney is Australia's most popular destination and we are certainly taking an aggressive path forward when it comes to musicals with the premiere of Doctor Zhivago next February," she said. "Our strong and diverse cultural calendar is providing more and more people with reasons to visit NSW. "Being able to choose from a range of exhibitions, theatre and sporting events year round gives visitors the reason they are looking for to book a flight and visit Australia's only global city."

Sydneysiders have only seven more weeks to see one of the most successful shows in theatre history at the most perfect theatre it could play in, the glorious Capitol Theatre.

All remaining tickets are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com.au or 1300 723 038.
